II. Public Partnerships for Green Spaces, Green Economy and Green Lifestyles

Green spaces have become an integral necessity in the urban human lives. With shrinking green spaces, urbanization has degraded the quality of life among the city people. Green spaces provide means of improving physical fitness, establishes connection with nature and ease in reducing mental stress.

A green lifestyle is another healthy and eco-friendly approach we can adopt in our day-to-day lives.  Green lifestyle is a conscious approach of adopting environment friendly practices like the principle of 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), composting, harvesting rainwater, nature conservation through plant and tree cultivation and so on.

Another important frontier, green economy is about achieving economic growth with environmental protection that also aims for the progress of social development as well. WCN encourages these practices by integrating people from different backgrounds and providing a platform to promote a healthy lifestyle.

ECOTOURISM
Ecotourism has a significant contribution to conservation and development in the form of nature based tourism. This plays a huge role in protecting natural areas, promoting and improving quality of tourism and empowering local community that also helps in uplifting local economy. Ecotourism, a nature based tourism creates a sustainable path for economic, environmental and sustainable development. To support, develop and flourish ecotourism, WCN has been actively facilitating various activities focused on local cultures, wilderness adventures, volunteering, personal growth and learning new sustainable ways to live.


WCN’s Ecotourism program is extensively working to establish a responsible ecotourism system that includes programs that minimize the adverse effects of traditional tourism on the natural environment, enhance the cultural integrity of local people and build capacities on entrepreneurship and enterprise. After the earthquake in 2015, WCN with the support of SOS Malta, prioritized in reconstructing lodge at Gatlang Village.

In addition, a 10-day training on Eco Tourism, Cooking and Hospitality was given to 10 young entrepreneurs from Gatlang Village, Rasuwa, to strengthen the capacity of the local community in Eco Tourism of Gatlang. Also, hospitality providers were also trained in promote recycling, energy efficiency, water re-use. WCN also conducted a one-day training workshop on responsibilities and ethics of a nature guide for 20 participants. The workshop stressed on exploring the potential of ecotourism and opportunities and challenges for developing an ecotourism destination.


As an initiative of WCN, women group of Padmapur Community forest in Chitwan has started Homestay Program, targeting several groups on national and international visitors. To expand the ecotourism activity and build its essence, the visitors are encouraged to plant a tree per individual and be the part of forest growers. 

GREEN AND OPEN SPACES

WCN's program for green spaces promotes places of recreation in cities, towns and suburbs. WCN advocates for these spaces as they provide a multitude of benefits to human populations, and also provide sanctuaries and vital habitat for urban wildlife - for mammals, birds, insects and seeds to survive which in turn maintains natural balance and ecosystem services. WCN partners with different institutions public and private to promote Green spaces in different areas in developing small community and public parks, community gardens, urban and community forests

WCN believes green open spaces provide the needed place of gathering and recreational space for people of different walks of life –where people can build a sense of community, enhance their physical health and mental wellbeing as well as create a safe place for children to play.

KNOWLEDGE HUB

WCN’s Knowledge hub offers in dissemination of concept of green spaces, green lifestyle and green economy in the form of various mediums such as webinars, videos, infographics, sharing program and conferences. Importance, Opportunities and Challenges regarding these issues are discussed and presented among the community of various backgrounds to aware and bring positive changes in society.
