WCN has initiated a new program called Zero Waste Schools in two schools of the Kathmandu by establishing on campus composting and reducing / reusing, recycling, programs in an effort to move each school as close to Zero Waste as possible while instilling in students and school staff a sense of environmental stewardship. A Workshop was conducted to build the capacity WCN staffs and volunteers on the Concept of Zero Waste and Zero Waste Schools. The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Cyndra Dietz, Program Director of the Education Program at Ecocycle, Boulder, US. The program covered different topics on waste and the different programs in developing a successful Zero Waste Schools Program.

In order to assess the amount and the type of the waste being generated in a day by a classroom the students of class 5 of Shuvatara school conducted a waste audit on may 28, 2013 under the Zero Waste School project - an environment education initiative of WCN. Zero Waste school is modeled after Eco Cycle's environment education program, Boulder Colorado, US . The audit was conducted under the supervision of Ms. Brinda Dewan, Nature Interpreter, WCN and Ms. Cyndra Dietz, Program Director,Education Program Eco Cycle.
